Why Refill Subscribers Renew, Lapse or Return
Connecting actual subscription outcomes with the routines behind them.
THE SITUATION A refillable personal-care brand could see subscription outcomes in its customer records, but not the household routines that produced them. A cancellation reason selected in an account page did not show whether product remained, the refill arrived at the wrong moment or flexibility restored value later.
The business decision
The brand needed to decide whether to change refill cadence, reminders, skip controls, pack configuration or recovery communication. The study therefore linked behavioural evidence with verified renewed, lapsed and restarted cohorts.

Why independent research mattered
Neutral outreach allowed subscribers to describe oversupply, storage, skipped use, competitor switching and dissatisfaction without protecting the brand relationship. Behavioural prompts were separated from retention messaging.
LOCATION LOGIC The design is geography-neutral because the decision is centred on use and refill timing. Location becomes a comparison only if fulfilment, delivery reliability, refill access or pricing differs enough to change renewal.

STRUCTURED COMPARISON The reachable subscriber base supports a short survey that compares defined cohorts on cadence fit, product remaining, control use and return triggers. Counts describe the 132 valid responses, not the wider market.
ROUTINE EXPLANATION Twenty-four mobile diaries capture what happens between deliveries: usage variation, product accumulation, travel, household sharing, storage and the moment a skip or return decision becomes likely.

Question order protects behavioural recall: participants describe the event before rating or selecting an explanation.
