PROOF-OF-CONCEPT EVALUATION / PRIMARY RESEARCH
Prove What Matters
Before You Commit
Primary research to test whether a proposition is credible in the real conditions that determine adoption.
THE DECISION
Should we invest, refine, redirect or stop this proposition before committing to broader development, launch or scale-up?
A Proof of Concept Is Not a Positive Reaction
A promising idea can attract interest and still fail when people consider their current workflow, budget, technical constraints, risk appetite or implementation effort. This service tests the proposition against the people and conditions that will determine whether it can move forward.

The August Research Proof Line
The work begins with a decision, not a research method. Each stage narrows the uncertainty that matters most.

What We Test
Proposition
Is the value clear, specific and credible?
Intended use
Can people see where it fits in their work or life?
Operating reality
What changes, effort, risk or dependencies would it create?
Alternatives
Why would someone switch from the current approach?
Conditions
What must be true for the proposition to work?
Decision consequence
What evidence is needed before the next investment?
Who Takes Part
Participants are people who would need to adopt, buy, operate, approve, implement or support the proposition. Depending on the proof question, this may include prospective customers, end users, procurement leads, operational teams, channel partners, technical decision-makers or relevant service stakeholders. They are selected because their real-world response can change the investment decision.
This is different from a Technical Expert Panel. A panel brings selected experts together to challenge a consequential technical choice. Proof-of-Concept Evaluation gathers structured primary evidence from the people and organisations who would experience the proposition in practice.
Where Proof-of-Concept Evaluation Creates Value
Product and innovation teams Test a proposition before committing to a fuller build, pilot or commercial plan.
R&D and technical teams Identify the use-case conditions and constraints that the technical solution must satisfy.
Commercial and strategy teams Understand adoption logic, perceived value, switching barriers and decision ownership.
Leadership and investors Replace untested conviction with a clear case to proceed, narrow the scope or stop.
How Primary Research Is Delivered
Agree the proposition, intended respondents, decisions at stake and evidence that would count as credible.
Develop a concept narrative, scenario, prototype, sample, workflow or other practical stimulus. It need not be a finished product.
Recruit prospective customers, end users, operators, buyers, partners or technical stakeholders according to the decision being tested.
Use in-depth interviews, moderated concept tests, workflow walk-throughs, prototype demonstrations or targeted stakeholder conversations.
Separate evidence from assumptions, identify conditions and failure points, and recommend a practical next route.
Why August Research
We design the smallest credible proof around the decision that matters, rather than commissioning broad feedback. The evaluation is built to expose what would need to change for adoption, not to validate the original idea at all costs. Our role is to frame the question, recruit or identify the right respondents, run the research and make the evidence usable for a real next decision.
Where a project requires laboratory, pilot-facility or manufacturing capability, August Research scouts and assesses suitable external institutions against the project requirement. We do not own or operate laboratories, factories or manufacturing centres. We maintain and continually expand a database of relevant institutions, but each project route is selected for its specific technical, operational and geographic fit.
What You Receive
A PoC Decision Pack: the proposition and proof criteria, respondent rationale, evaluation stimulus, evidence by criterion, key objections, conditions for adoption, unresolved uncertainty, recommended changes and a proceed, refine, redirect or stop recommendation.
Frequently Combined With
- Product Testing & Validation
- KOL Interviews
- Technical Expert Panels
- Clinical & Industrial Expert Validation
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as a pilot? No. A PoC asks whether the core proposition deserves a pilot. A pilot tests delivery in a more defined live setting.
Does the proposition need to be built? No. The stimulus can be a prototype, sample, scenario, process map or clearly described concept.
Who performs the research? August Research designs and conducts the primary research. Specialist providers may be engaged where recruitment, testing or regulated work requires them.
Let's Discuss Your Project
If you have an important proposition but the next investment decision still rests on assumptions, August Research can design a focused primary-research proof that gives your team a clearer route forward.
