PRODUCT PERCEPTION STUDY | HOME ENERGY TECHNOLOGY
What Makes a Refurbished EV Home Charger Feel Safe Enough to Consider?
A responsibility-chain study in North Rhine-Westphalia designed to show how product condition, installer endorsement, documentation, warranty and service jointly create trust.
SETTING
Cologne, Dusseldorf, Essen and Dortmund
PRODUCT
Refurbished wallbox, condition record and service offer
DECISION
Which trust chain supports resale and installation
Background
An energy-technology company was considering a refurbished home-charging offer. A lower price and circular-economy benefit could attract EV owners, but the word 'refurbished' might also signal hidden electrical wear, uncertain compatibility or weak accountability if something failed. The decision depended on more than the unit itself: installers, resellers, warranty terms and service ownership all transferred trust to the product.
The trust chain
UNIT
Visible condition and traceable refurbishment
INSTALLER
Acceptance, compatibility and responsibility
DOCUMENTATION
Testing, serial history and declared limits
SERVICE
Warranty, replacement and escalation ownership
THE PERCEPTION RISK
A strong product claim could still fail if one responsibility link remained unclear. The study therefore tested the complete trust chain, not preference for refurbished equipment in isolation.
Why independent research mattered
Owners might avoid challenging an installer, while installers might assume that certification or warranty language is clearer to customers than it is. Independent sessions allowed each role to assign responsibility without needing to protect a commercial relationship.
02 | PARTICIPANT AND SIMULATION DESIGN
Responsibility Chain Simulation
Each role receives a realistic decision packet and must decide whether to pass the product to the next stage of purchase, installation or service.
ROLE | COUNT | SCREEN | SIMULATED DECISION |
|---|---|---|---|
EV homeowners | 12 | Owns or is preparing to install home charging; involved in the purchase decision | Shortlist, seek installer review or reject |
Qualified installers | 9 | Installs or assesses residential EV wallboxes in NRW | Accept, conditionally accept or decline installation |
Reseller or service advisers | 6 | Explains, sells or supports home charging products | List, warrant, service or escalate |
Location-specific outreach
OWNER RECRUITMENT Targeted EV-owner recruitment across apartment, terraced and detached-home contexts in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Essen and Dortmund.
INSTALLER RECRUITMENT Professional screening would verify recent residential wallbox work, customer-facing responsibility and willingness to inspect the defined product packet.
SERVICE RECRUITMENT Reseller and service roles would be selected for direct experience explaining warranty, replacement or fault-escalation conditions.
Decision packet
CONDITION
Unit images, serial and refurbishment record
INSTALLATION
Compatibility and installer responsibility scenario
ASSURANCE
Test statement and warranty boundaries
SERVICE
Replacement and fault-escalation path
Note: The 27-participant architecture is illustrative. Final scope depends on access to a representative unit, installer response, travel and confidentiality.
03 | QUESTIONS AND VISUAL EVIDENCE
Identify where responsibility transfers trust
The method records not only whether a role trusts the product, but who they believe must stand behind each claim.
Question background
EXAMPLE OWNER CONTEXT
You are replacing or adding a home charger. This refurbished wallbox is offered at a lower price than a new unit. Review the condition record, installer statement, warranty and service route provided. Assume nothing beyond the packet.
Sample questions
NOTICE Which detail first made the unit feel inspected, reused, old or uncertain?
INTERPRET What does 'refurbished' make you assume about electrical safety, lifespan, software support and prior use?
BELIEVE Which party's statement carries the most weight, and what evidence must sit behind it?
RESPONSIBILITY If the unit fails after installation, who do you expect to diagnose, replace and pay?
ACT Would you shortlist, install, stock, warrant or reject the unit under this responsibility model?
Exhibit | Trust-transfer map
1 | CONDITION
Visible refurbishment record
2 | INSTALLER
Fit and installation acceptance
3 | ASSURANCE
Traceable test and warranty
4 | SERVICE
Named fault and replacement owner
5/27
Progress with product-only information
14/27
Progress when installer accepts
20/27
Progress when assurance is traceable
23/27
Progress when service ownership is explicit
The hypothetical map shows that trust is transferred through responsibility. Documentation helps, but explicit installer acceptance and service ownership determine whether the refurbished offer feels actionable.
Role-specific trust threshold
OWNER
One accountable route after purchase
INSTALLER
Condition traceability and defined liability
RESELLER
Explainable warranty and replacement process
CLIENT
A chain that remains coherent across all three roles
04 | DECISION OUTPUT
Sell the responsibility chain, not only the refurbished unit
The offer becomes credible when condition, installation, assurance and service tell one consistent story.
Illustrative recommendation
DECISION AREA | RECOMMENDED ACTION | TRUST EFFECT |
|---|---|---|
Product page | Show the refurbishment record and limits before the circularity benefit | Makes condition visible before value claims |
Installer route | Provide a defined pre-install acceptance and escalation step | Transfers technical trust through the installer |
Warranty | State who warrants the unit, installation and replacement separately | Removes responsibility ambiguity |
Service | Use one customer-facing fault route with named hand-offs | Keeps trust intact after purchase |
What the client would receive
TRUST-TRANSFER MAP
Where confidence moves or breaks
RESPONSIBILITY REGISTER
Expected owner for each risk
ROLE OBJECTION CARDS
Owner, installer and reseller concerns
OFFER DECISION BRIEF
Condition, warranty and service sequence
INDICATIVE DELIVERY Often 6 to 8 weeks, subject to unit access, installer recruitment, travel, documentation readiness and confidentiality.
STUDY BOUNDARIES Perception research does not establish electrical safety, conformity, installation suitability, cybersecurity, warranty enforceability or legal compliance. Every technical and legal claim requires its own validation.
Note: All counts and findings are hypothetical and demonstrate the possible output only.
